Registration for Lake Havasu Summer Kids Programs is Open

Registration for Lake Havasu summer kids programs is now open. Summer break for local Lake Havasu City schools will soon be in full force. If you don't want your kids languishing in front of the TV all summer or bored and restless, focus their energetic spirit on more active pursuits, like the weekday youth summer camps, aquatic programs or sports activities being held through the Lake Havasu Aquatics and Recreation Department.

The Sunshine Kids Summer Camp is held Mondays through Fridays at Lake Havasu's Jamaica (3437 Jamaica Blvd), Nautilus (1425 Patrician Dr) and Smoketree (2395 N Smoketree Ave) elementary schools. This camp is for kids entering grades K-4 in the 2012-2013 school year. For kids beginning grades 5-7, Camp Iwannago is also available Mondays through Fridays at Lake Havasu's Thunderbolt Middle School (695 Thunderbolt Ave). The cost to attend the camps are $210 for the first child in a family and $165 for each additional family member. The camp fee includes lunch and a snack each day. In addition to being able to play with other Havasu kids, there are field trips to the Aquatic Center, the movie theater and Havasu Lanes.

To help Lake Havasu children from underprivileged families enjoy the same benefits that the summer youth camps give other kids, approximately 30 Lake Havasu restaurants are participating in the "Dollars for Kids" campaign. If you dine at any participating restaurant until the end of May and add just $1 to your total when paying, that dollar will be donated to the Recreation Services Youth Scholarship Fund. This fund helps financially struggling Lake Havasu families pay for after school care as well as summer youth programs such as camps and sports. Just ask your server if they participate in the "Dollars for Kids" campaign so you can give the next time you dine out.

For more information on registering for any of the Lake Havasu aquatics or recreation activities this summer as well as inquiring about financial assistance to help pay for the programs, please call (928) 453-8686. Registration for Lake Havasu summer kids programs is currently open. Remember, though, that these programs fill up fast. So, you need to hurry before your child misses out on a summer of fun in the sun in Lake Havasu City!

Motocross Racing in Lake Havasu

In addition to all the aquatic fun our lake offers, the City of Lake Havasu is also known as a desert oasis. The surrounding BLM grounds allow sand dogs to let loose. Stadium Motocross Racing comes to Lake Havasu this weekend. This Saturday, May 11th, the Havasu 95 Speedway will be holding the first of three rounds of Stadium Motocross racing beginning at 12pm for the big bikes. Little bikes and pits will race immediately after.

Sponsored by Lake Havasu City's own 928MX, the first round of Stadium Motocross Racing is dedicated to the memory of Kenny "Kendog" Donaldson (#220), a major supporter of the motocross effort in Lake Havasu. There will be a $10 entry fee per person at the gate on the day of the race. Saturday racing is $45. You can come out to watch the racers practice on Friday night for just $20. If you want to make a weekend of it, bring your camper out and stay overnight for just $10.

The next two rounds will take place in Lake Havasu City on June 9th and July 21st. For adrenaline junkies, Stadium Motocross Racing in Lake Havasu is a must see. Come to the Havasu 95 Speedway this weekend to enjoy some fun racing in the desert. The Lake Havasu lifestyle can be enjoyed both on land and sea!

Bass Pro Fishing Festival in Lake Havasu

If last month's Lake Havasu Boat Show wasn't enough for you aqua-babies, then you're in luck. Retail giant and fisherman's friend Bass Pro Shops is bringing its first ever Fishing Festival to Lake Havasu! For three days beginning this Friday, May 4th, you will have the opportunity to see and test drive new models of boats, talk with vendors and maybe even participate in the fishing tournament.

Vendors and sponsors of the first ever Bass Pro Fishing Festival in Lake Havasu include Lowrance, Mercury, Navionics, A&M Graphics, Anderson Toyota and Days Inn Lake Havasu. The boat show itself, which includes free demos, takes place all weekend. The fishing tournament, however, will take place on Saturday and Sunday (May 5th & 6th). Weigh-ins will happen at the end of each day's fishing (3pm). The cost is $400 per boat (that includes $350 for registration and $50 for the Big Bass option), with approximately 150 boats expected to compete. If you and your buddies are interested in participating, simply click here for your registration form. There will be a special Angler's Appreciation Dinner held on Friday evening (May 4th) for all who participate.

On Sunday, get the little tykes interested in drowning some worms at the shoreline fishing tournament. Open to anyone ages 5-15, kids will be competing for fun prizes. The kids fishing tournament takes place from 8am to 12pm. While kids under 13 don't need to have a fishing license, they do need to be accompanied by an adult who does and must bring their own fishing equipment with them. If the lake proves a little too much for your youngster, there will be a giant inflatable pool that they can cast their lines into instead.

Of course, there will also be food available for purchase throughout the entire three day event. The inaugural Bass Pro Fishing Festival in Lake Havasu City will take place from 8am to 6pm on Friday and 5:30am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday at Windsor State Park (Lot #4). The 2012 Lake Havasu Boat Show is winding down this weekend but the fun is not! The Lake Havasu Poker Run takes place this Friday, April 27th, 2012 beginning at 7am and continues through Saturday, April 28th with the Desert Storm Shootout and Awards. Here's a rundown of what's happening this weekend so you don't miss a thing:

POKER RUN - FRIDAY, APRIL 27

7am to 8:30am: Registration and sign-in at Nautical Poker Run Village
8:30am to 9am: Poker Run Captains meeting at Nautical Poker Run Village (mandatory)
9am to 12pm: Shootout registration opens
9:45am: Get your group leader flag at the Thompson Bay off the Nautical Inn beachfront for the channel parade
10am: London Bridge Channel parade
10:45am to 12:30pm: Morning card stations are open (Station #1 - Havasu Springs, Station #2 - Havasu Landing, Station #3 - Thompson Bay)
12pm to 2:30pm: Lunch at the Nautical Inn's Conference Center
2:30pm to 4:30pm: Poker Run continues (Station #4 - Black Meadow Landing, Station #5 - Crazy Horse)
2:30pm to 4:30pm: Get to the Pirate Cove Resort to have your helicopter photo taken on your boat (2-3 photos included in your Poker Run package)
6:30pm to 10pm: Outdoor party for Poker Run participants at the Nautical Poker Run Village with live music, pizza and Budweiser

2012 Lake Havasu Boat Show Has Arrived!

It's that time of year, folks. The 2012 Lake Havasu Boat Show has arrived! It's fitting that a city known for its fantastic lake hosts one of the biggest boat shows in the Southwest. We do take our water activities seriously around these parts. That's why one weekend isn't enough for a boat show here. Instead, there will be amazing deals, events and fun for everyone from now through Sunday, April 28th.

This weekend (April 21st and 22nd), vendors of more than 40 different brands of boats, pontoons, wakeboards, cruisers, sportboats and personal watercraft will be showcasing the latest and greatest aquatic wonders at Lake Havasu State Park's Windsor 4 located right next to Hampton Inn on London Bridge Road. Show hours are from 9am to dusk today and 9am to 3pm on Sunday. Qualified buyers will be able to have their own personal boat demo done after 3pm on Sunday or by appointment on Monday, April 23, from 9am to 4pm. All demos will launch from the Windsor Beach Launch Ramp. Admission to the boat show is just $2 for adults and free for kids ages 12 and under. Parking is free.

If you want to see the boats in action, watch one of the races scheduled. Today's schedule includes Men's Marathon water ski racing at 12:30pm and Offshore power boat racing at 2:15pm. If you can't make a race today, though, don't worry. There will be more racing for the adrenaline junkies scheduled for Sunday, April 22:

9am - Mini Marathon water ski racing
9;45am - Women's Marathon water ski racing
11am - Men's Marathon water ski racing
12:15pm - Relay water ski racing
1:30pm - Main Event: Offshore power boat racing

Food and liquid refreshments will be available on-site, including a beer garden. However, off-site alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited. While it is fine that you bring your favorite furry friend to the event, they must be on leash. There will be LOTS of people walking about. Lake Havasu's Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life comes to Lake Havasu this weekend. This special overnight event begins Friday evening (April 20, 2012) at 6pm and continues through until 6am the following day. Since it's a relay, you don't actually have to be walking the entire time. Instead, a team of walkers will spend the night camped out around the Lake Havasu High School track and take turns walking throughout the evening. While you are waiting for your turn to participate, there will be food, games and other activities to keep you occupied. Families are encouraged to be their own "team". And it costs just $10 to register. Of course, all donations are accepted.

As part of Lake Havasu's Relay for Life event, there will be a special Luminaria Ceremony for loved ones who have lost their battle with cancer as well as to honor those that have survived. The Survivor Ceremony is meant to honor both survivors of cancer as well as those that have cared for them during their fight. All Relay for Life events raise money to help fund projects such as the Hope Lodge (temporary lodgings for cancer patients and their families/caregivers so that they can be near their loved ones during treatment far from home), Road to Recovery (providing rides to treatment for cancer patients), Look Good...Feel Better (teaches cancer patients how to deal with the changes in their skin and hair loss while going through treatment), Reach to Recovery (cancer patients can talk to a peer volunteer who has been through the same process) and college scholarships for kids who have battled cancer.

As of the writing of this post, 28 teams with 189 participants have raised $16,093 for this weekend's relay. If you are interested in participating or simply want to donate on behalf of someone who is, please visit the Lake Havasu Relay for Life site. It's not too late to put together a team of your own so you can participate in the Lake Havasu Relay for Life this Friday evening at Lake Havasu High School. You'll be helping a fantastic charity who does so much good for cancer patients and their families. Please consider joining in.

NASCAR Comes to Havasu

Yes. Lake Havasu is known mainly for its abundance of aquatic activities. However, we love our cars, too (remember our Cruisin' on Main events?). Well, this weekend, NASCAR comes to Havasu. More specifically, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West will be racing at the Havasu 95 Speedway, our local race track, on Saturday night, from 5pm to 8pm. This is the first time NASCAR has ever made it to our little neck of the woods. And I know adrenaline junkies are excited!

On Friday, April 13, 2012, drivers will be holding a meet and greet at Kokomo's. From 2pm to 3pm, everyone is welcome to meet the guys that will be driving the cars around the track on Saturday evening. Get yourself an autograph from your favorites as well. Afterward, watch the haulers parade the crew and their gear from Dillard's (5501 Hwy 95 N) to the Havasu 95 Speedway. Once you're there, watch these guys practice from 5pm to 8pm. Admission to the practice session is absolutely free to all who are interested. It's a great preview of coming attractions!

On Saturday night (April 14th), the real racing begins. Watch actual NASCAR vehicles compete as they make their way to the checkered flag. Gates open at 3pm. Racing will begin at 5pm. General admission is just $30 per person, while kids ages 6-11 are $15 each and kids under the age of 6 absolutely free. You can purchase your tickets at Bill McAnally Racing, Gene Price Racing (928-667-2626, tickets will be available at Will Call) or ASAP Digital Printing (928-854-8999). Of course, you can always get them at Havasu 95 Speedway as well during Friday's practice session or on the day of the race itself.

It's great that NASCAR has made it's way to Havasu. This isn't the only race the Havasu 95 Speedway hosts, though. Modifieds, vintage racers, street stocks, factory stocks, late models and more compete throughout the year. For a complete schedule of the current racing season, please visit the Havsau 95 Speedway website. Whatever type of vehicle a gear head might be interested in, Lake Havasu has the race for you.

Hot Cars in Havasu

Lake Havasu City offers more than 300 days of pure golden sunshine throughout the year. Now that Old Man Winter has gone into hibernation and temperatures are warming up, nighttime is the right time for a bit of fun, frolicking and strolling down Memory Lane with some hot cars in Havasu. Every Thursday evening from 4pm to 8pm, the "main drag" (McCulloch Blvd., from Smoketree to Acoma) takes a blast from the past with Cruisin' on Main, Lake Havasu's version of American Graffitti.

Auto enthusiasts from all walks of life bring their hot rods, classic cars, trucks and even some motorcycles to Havasu's "Main Street" to show off their cool rides. But you don't have to own a classic automobile to participate. Everyone is welcome to walk around, take in the views and talk to the owners of each vehicle...maybe even reminisce about the "good ol' days" as well. Most of the stores on Havasu's "Main Street" stay open late while many area restaurants offer Cruisin' specials. So add some shopping and dining out to your Thursday evening's entertainment. Throw in classic oldies live and on the PA system and you're in for a neat treat.

McCulloch Blvd. is definitely a hoppin' place every Thursday evening from 4pm to 8pm. Parking is first come/first served. Get there early and be prepared to walk around. You're not going to want to miss any of the hot cars in Havasu when you go Cruisin' on Main. Yet another reason to love the Lake Havasu lifestyle. This is definitely one happenin' scene, Daddy-O!

Movies in the Park in Lake Havasu

One of the wonderful things about living in Lake Havasu City is the weather. It gives you plenty of opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors in all its glory. In fact, many "indoor" activities are brought outside: dining, shopping, etc. We even watch our movies outside. The Lake Havasu City Parks and Recreation Department offers free Movies in the Park every Saturday evening beginning at dusk (7pm in March, 7:30pm in April). All you have to do is bring the family, some chairs, blankets and jackets (it can still get a little nippy after the sun goes down) and head on down to Rotary Park (1400 Smoketree Ave) any Saturday night.

Each evening's entertainment is shown on a giant 20' x 18' inflatable screen. All screenings are family-friendly and a different movie is presented each week. Bring the family, a blanket and/or chairs for your comfort and a snack to enjoy a nice evening of family-friendly entertainment at Rotary Park. Movies in the Park in Lake Havasu is just one example of how Havasu residents incorporate the outdoors into all aspects of the Lake Havasu lifestyle.

Tips to Avoid High Garbage Disposal Repairs

Garbage disposals are a great tool to have in the kitchen until they fail, and the repair costs can be expensive in some cases. Therefore I have some tips on how to avoid high garbage disposal repairs.

The very useful garbage disposal cuts down kitchen clean-up by cutting food into small bits that can safely flow through your drain pipe. However, as with any machine, they have limited power and are prone to breakdowns. But, the good news is that if you follow just a few basic guidelines for appropriate sink disposal, you can avoid costly repairs from clogs, plumbing and replacement parts.

You should always run cold water when using your disposal unit. Warm water usually liquefies fat from foods and can cause clogs. You should always run the disposal when you put food in the drain. If you leave food in the drain, you can cause too much work for the disposal when you add more food later.

When you have large amounts of food, add a little at a time so the disposal will have enough time to chop up the food properly before adding more. And, you should let the disposal run for a few minutes after the food grinding has stopped. You can also run a little dish detergent in the disposal to clean it from time to time.

Just like your kitchen knives, the blades on your disposal will become dull at some point in time. You can sharpen the blades by running a glass full of ice cubes through it. Ice cubes can be very useful for maintaining your garbage disposal. They beat against the walls of the disposal and between the blades to clear away build-up from food.

You can deodorize your disposal by cutting a lemon into quarters and putting it into the disposal. You can also add baking soda to the drain for a lemony fresh scent.

Today starts the first day of an eventful month for Lake Havasu City. Beginning today in Lake Havasu, you can catch “Cruisin on Main” each Thursday evening at McCulloch Blvd. Admission is always free. There will be hot rods, classic cars, rat rods, motorcycles, trucks, and more at Cusisin on Main Street. For more information visit www.lhcmainstreet.com.

Today, you can also you can view classic cars at Havasu Classic from 4pm to 6pm at Wienerschnitzel. This is a great event for classic car lovers and owners. Admission is free. And, for more information you can visit www.havasuclassics.com.

March 2nd will be the big day of the 4th Annual Bluegrass on the Beach starting at 10am and will continue until 6:30pm. Admission is $20 for adults, $10 for teens, and 12 years and under are free. Bring the whole family for this great event and enjoy.

March 2nd is also Bikes on the Boulevard at Lake Havaus’s Main Street and goes thru to McCulloch Blvd. Admission is free and you can find more information at www.lhcmainstreet.com.

March 3rd from 11am to 1pm at Wienerschnitzel you can find the Relics and Rods Cruise In. Every Saturday you’ll see the Relics and Rods Cruise-In, so all Hot Rodders and Classic Car Enthusiasts are welcome.

March 4th is the US Anglers Tournament at Lake Havasu State Park-Windsor 4. The basic entry fee is $175. Anglers fish as a team for cash, prizes and to accrue points for the fish-off. Additional information can be found at www.anglerschoice.com.

March 4th is Hoola Hoop Jam. Each Sunday until the end of April 2012, you can come out to enjoy the fun of Hoola Hoop Jam from 12-2pm at Rotary Park. Admission is free.

March 10th will be the 3rd Annual Full Throttle Harley Days at Shugrue’s Bridgeview Room at 6pm. Admission is $300, which includes a fabulous dinner for two to support local charities. There will be a 50/50 drawing and you’ll have a chance to win a 2012 Harley Davidson.
